Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers a steady, collaborative space to explore the emotional and relational patterns that may be shaping your present life.

Even when you appear capable on the outside, you may feel anxious, emotionally disconnected, exhausted, or caught in familiar relationship dynamics that are difficult to change. Rather than viewing these experiences as personal failures, psychodynamic therapy approaches them with curiosity and compassion.

How Does Psychodynamic Therapy Work?

Psychodynamic therapy explores how earlier and later experiences may influence present emotions, expectations, relationships, and ways of coping. Together, we may notice recurring patterns, feelings that are difficult to express, or protective responses—such as overthinking, withdrawing, people-pleasing, or feeling a strong need to take care of everything—that may once have helped you manage difficult circumstances.

An attachment-based lens can help us explore how early and later relationships may shape your expectations of closeness, safety, trust, and support. You may talk about your relationship history, important experiences of connection or loss, and patterns you notice in current relationships.

Together, we can consider how you seek connection, respond to distance, or protect yourself when relationships feel uncertain, while recognizing that these responses developed for understandable reasons.

At times, what arises within the therapeutic relationship may offer another source of insight, but this is only one part of the work and is explored collaboratively when it feels relevant. We do not assume that every present difficulty is simply a repetition of the past.

Psychodynamic work may also support you in exploring the family system in which you grew up, including roles, relationships, strengths, losses, and patterns that may have developed or continued across generations. With your consent, we may use a genogram to map relevant family relationships and experiences.

A genogram can offer another way to reflect on your early environment and consider how intergenerational experiences may influence your present life, without assuming that family patterns have one fixed meaning or determine who you are.

Who Is Psychodynamic Therapy For?

Psychodynamic therapy may be a good fit if you are navigating anxiety, ongoing worry, complex trauma, attachment-related concerns, burnout, grief, a sense of emotional disconnection, social isolation, life transitions, or relational patterns that seem difficult to shift.

It may also resonate if you understand your patterns intellectually but want support exploring their deeper emotional roots.

My Approach to Psychodynamic Therapy

My approach is person-centred, trauma-informed, and strengths-based. The responses you rely on often developed for understandable reasons and are approached with curiosity rather than judgment.

Therapy unfolds in a way that honours your boundaries and gives you room to decide what feels manageable.

Together, we can explore what your patterns have helped you manage, whether they continue to support you in the same ways, and what new possibilities might feel helpful.

Over time, this work may foster greater self-understanding, emotional flexibility, healthier boundaries, and a more compassionate relationship with yourself and others.
